Did anyone watch the harrowing documentary a couple of night ago on the BBC, called ‘Drowning in Plastic?’

Most of it was gruesome and depressing stuff, although there were some moments of inspiration as we met the most ingenious of people, who were devoted to inventing ways to tackle the problem, from giant vacuum cleaners on the top of the sea, to replacing the use of plastic food sachets with ones made from seaweed!! They were also making edible cups and plates from similar products!

A massive part of the problem seems to be that in many countries, there is not the facility or infrastructure to have a proper recycling system, so vast amounts of bottles get thrown into the rivers which eventually make their way out to sea. Apparently, there are three huge floating rafts of plastic drifting in our oceans! In this country of course, we do have the recycling capabilities, albeit with some confusion between various authorities about what can and can’t be recycles.

I did a little research about the products we supply just to put my mind at rest. The drums of oil we supply are made of HDPE, which is one of the most easily recyclable plastics, and our one litre bottles are made of PET, which is also simple to recycle. I am sure you already do this, but if not, please remember that all our bottles and drums can be put out for recycling, so make sure this happens.

My personal gripe is about bottled water. I just don’t understand why people buy it. 38 Billion water bottles go to landfill every year in the US alone!! Let’s go back to tap water, or Corporation pop as my mate calls it!

Anyway, just a bit of a rant, but the serious point is about the recycling!!
